Finding Sanity:A Goal for Errand/Work Day

Today's goal: Love each other well. This is what we determined this morning while leaving the house. Great way to start out on a day of errands and cleaning. A day that would usually end up with frustration, harsh words on both sides, and everyone in dire need of a nap and space. Every time we had an issue of irksomeness, we recited our goal for the day and I'm amazed at the adjustment it produced. I may just have a canvas made of this goal and add it to our family rules. Probably wouldn't hurt to paste it a billion other places as well as we are most certainly not perfect and need to be reminded to "love each other well" sometimes on a constant basis...especially on hard days.

This morning we started out with chores. For the kids, that mostly means feeding/watering their animals. We have found that our Zoe girl is a little farm girl. She loves all of the rabbits and even said while we were at Atwoods picking up more rabbit feed, "when I grow up, I'm going to do all of my shopping here!"

Next we headed to Wal-Mart: the bane of my existence. Drama, much? At least Zoe comes by it honestly. I needed dog food, which is much less expensive there, as well as a few things for our trip to the lake tomorrow and our trip coming up next week. Can you guess how many times we recited our goal for the day while in WMart?

I decided that we did so amazingly well, especially me keeping my cool and not getting terribly frustrated with the whole process, that we would get a treat for lunch. We shared a chicken quesadilla with queso and chips at Qdoba. Yum! Well worth it.

After a stop at the bank, we headed to The Purple Glaze to pick up the kids' projects from earlier in the week. They turned out so well! We'll definitely be going back again.

We made our last stop at the library before heading home to clean and do yard work for the rest of the day. Picked up some books and got another sticker in the kids' Summer Reading Program booklets.

Hooray for a productive and fun day!

Of Grandparents, Alley Springs, Horse Rides, and S'mores

We reached my Grandma Reva's home late afternoon on Friday the 14th. Enjoyed the porch swing with my boys.

Tobyn thought Grandma's water feature was a big deal.

On our way to see Grandma's horse Cocoa, we stopped by the grape vines that me, my sisters, and cousins have eaten grapes from throughout the years.

Meeting Cocoa.

We took a trek back through the trees growing on Grandma Reva's land.

Then I remembered why growing up we always walked around the tree growth and not through it. I remember getting these cactus stickers pulled out of my feet.

Enjoying the swing by the pond at Grandma Reva's on Friday evening.

Toby thought Grandma's rose garden was beautiful and smelled good too.

Relaxing and visiting with Grandma Reva.

Tobyn learning the butt scoot that we all learned growing up in order to navigate the stairs in Grandma Reva's house.

Gideon swinging Zoe on the porch.

The next day we enjoyed a leisurely morning and prepared to take a trip to Alley Springs for the day. Zoe really got excited about reading on this trip. There's just something about reading outside.

Scenic drive on the way to Alley Springs.

Taking in the information center as we entered the park at Alley Springs.

The one room schoolhouse that's been on this property for over 100 years.

Tobyn thought the gravel was about as much fun as anything else.

We took a stop at the General Store behind the schoolhouse and picked up some old fashioned candy.

They enjoyed eating their candy on the General Store porch and playing a game of checkers too.

Grandma Reva and Pinki's purchases.

Gideon saw this sign on the way to the mill at Alley Springs and thought it meant "no underwear".

Visiting the flour mill at Alley Springs.

Having fun with history!

The grounds surrounding the mill are beautiful.

Exploring the grounds and finding lots of interesting caves and beautiful dragonflies.

Finally enjoying the cool water from the spring.

After all of the energy we'd used, a trip to the Dairy Shack in Ellington, MO was in order. Their fried mushrooms are amazing. The best I've ever had.

That afternoon we took a trip to my Aunt Marsha's house and swam in her pool. My other aunt, Connie, and her husband met us there.

After a cool swim in the pool, we headed back to Grandma Reva's house to roast hot dogs and make s'mores.

Caught Zoe reading to Tobyn after I'd put them to bed.

Sunday morning dawned bright and early and I welcomed the excuse to enjoy some coffee on my Grandma Reva's front porch.

After a quick breakfast, we headed down the road about an hour and a half away to my Papa Jack's house.

The varying roads on the way to Papa Jack's house and the gummy bears that kept my breakfast where it should be.

Playing on Papa Jack's porch and meeting one of his horses.

Exploring Papa Jack's land: swings throughout the grounds as well as horses just about everywhere you look.

The kids found old toys that we used to play with.

Zoe found a new friend in my Aunt Donna. I love that my kids have gotten to meet and spend time with people who are so special to me.

Another pen full of horses on Papa Jack's land.

Enjoying an old telephone.

We got to go on a wagon ride through Papa Jack's fields.

Papa Jack showed the kids how a horse wears shoes.

Then they each got to have their own individual ride with Uncle Jim leading them.

We made a few stops on the way back home and enjoyed a day in Tulsa with Pinki.
We had lunch at Old School Bagel Co. then went to the Purple Glaze and the kids each painted something.
After that, we went to Antoinette Baking Co. and tried our first macarons.
Unfortunately, my phone decided not to save any of the pictures from the Purple Glaze or Antoinette's.
We sure did have fun, though.

The kids also got their second sticker for the Summer Reading Program with the library.

We had a great vacation!
