"The Rag Coat" by Lauren Mills

Our book is set in the Appalachian Mountains and tells the story of Minna who's father passes away from working in the coal mines and the rag coat full of stories that the Quilting Mothers make for her.

Zoe & Gideon colored the Appalachian Mountains and learned about the four different compass points.

We watched some of the Christy episodes to gain a visual of what the Appalachian culture is like.

We talked about quilts and the different patterns used to make them. Then Zoe and Gideon colored and cut out their own paper quilt pattern.

We read these books to help us learn more about the Appalachian culture.

Although it was a somewhat sad story, we all enjoyed reading this book and taking a peek into the past.
